For real. I asked my girlfriend Sheila on June 27 if she would marry me and she said yes. It was a sweet and simple proposal. Sheila was totally aware that it was coming but had no expectations of when it was coming. All it took for preparation was an extended lunch. I bought some champagne and flowers and printed some pictures. When Sheila got home there was a note on the door explaining that I wasn’t home, but she should go in anyways. This was important because I didn’t want her to have to call me. Once inside she saw that there was a note on the table. I put the envelope under a rose to make sure she saw it. The note said some nice things, but more importantly there was a picture of this really nice bridge near our house where I was waiting patiently for her to show up. She made her way over to the bridge and I was right in the middle on top of the arc waiting. She walked up and I said some really nice things and got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She said yes so I gave her the ring (it’s a really nice ring btw). Then I opened the champagne and lit up a cigar and we chatted until the bottle was done, then headed to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner. So there you have it.

The Seasons are a changing

Singapore’s rainy season started and I have a soaking wet kitchen to prove it. I love you all. I need help.

Singapore is lacking a bustling music scene. There are thousands of cover bands, but very few people making or watching original music. There’s this one band called Amateur Takes Control that I’ve seen a couple of times and they’re the best band in Singapore. Pretty good, but the only one. Singapore actually has a history of copying music from America and I don’t mean the illegal CD.

The point is I really miss seeing awesome bands play awesome shows. I’m going to be back in Toronto from the 18th till the 30th of December and I’m desperate to see a concert. That’s where I live now by the way. Like seriously live. I have a job full time job at a bank in Singapore with a two year work permit and I have a nice condo in the valley. I’ll be back eventually, but its way too cool an adventure to leave now.

Art is to Singapore as Durian is to ??

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_nP7dDpGvzMk/RgeN8zd2qHI/AAAAAAAAAkw/MKpUakoNSBM/s400/simpboat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5046157983239022706" />I wanted to create an iconic piece of art, something that would be instantly recognizable and evoke a positive response. Instead I created a childlike picture that no one seems to get. So much for being the next Warhol. It’s from The Simpsons, don’t you know.

Believe it or not I haven’t traveled in two weeks. Instead I’ve been stuck in Singapore doing school work and school projects. But it has been a great opportunity for me to jump head first into the Singapore scene. I’ve painted a picture, been to a concert, met with government officials, visited the seedy underbelly, and most importantly made friends with the locals. They are a strange people with their own version of English and mannerisms, but I seem to fit in fairly well. They laugh at my jokes at least. It’s like playing in the C division of McGill bball intramurals except much shorter and more Chinese. For the longest time the basketball courts at school have been under construction, but last week the school finished their work and opened 6 brand new outdoor courts. I almost wet myself when I saw them. They are perfect, and I’m happy to say the competition is now up to mid-level B. The problem is my Chinese is really weak. I’m like ‘what’s the score’ and they’re like ‘chee shi.’ I just nod in agreement.

Something about some things.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_nP7dDpGvzMk/RezzGAtSexI/AAAAAAAAAkc/5E5nEHOUcpg/s400/baboon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5038669367715461906" />
Let me tell you something about some things. The Singapore Zoo is great. It’s a small sultanate sandwiched by Malaysia on the island of Borneo. It’s got lots of oil and therefore lots of money . . . but the money doesn’t seem to be shared very evenly. The sultan is one of the richest people in the world and was the richest person until 97. He’s got a couple of wives (you are allowed to have four in Brunei). Oh yeah and it’s a Muslim country so there is no booze allowed. In the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan, about 30,000 people live on the water. This small country is going to run out of oil soon and is trying to grow its tourism to make up the difference, but so far I’d say it isn’t working.

Let me tell you about my time in Brunei, specifically being there for ‘National Day.’ So National Day is the day where the Sultan comes out to view the people. The army, navy, air force, civil servants, students, business people, etc, parade in front of him and all the VIPs in the nation. It’s really grand and quite impressive. Being one of the only tourists there me and my team got a lot of attention. I was able to meet the Canadian High Commissioner; The team was interviewed by the national paper, the national television station, and the national radio station on a number of different occations; and everyone wanted to say hi to me. It was really cool. Brunei is one of those places in the world where the average citizen hasn’t been turned off by tourists and actually wants to come have a conversation with you. Its one of those places where the kids haven’t seen many tall white people before so they run after your taxi waving with huge smiles on their face. It was such a nice place to be after the chaos of Sabah.

Check out the pictures here.

Borneo-boy - Mt Kilabalu

This is my first attempt at video blogging. A friend over here does it all the time and it kind of makes sense. Easier to do, you get to see what I’m seeing, etc. So this is me on Mr. Kilabalu in Malaysian Borneo. The mountain is over 4000 metres high and it’s around zero on the peak. I didn’t bother bringing any warm clothes to Singapore which makes it really hard to stay warm. I wore three layers of t-shirts, a light sweater, a wind breaker, my camping pants, and a towel on my head. Making it to the peak was totally satisfying, but compared to Mt. Everest at nearly 9000 metres it doesn’t seem so impressive.

Here are the pics of the trip up the mountain.

Hongky Kong Man

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_nP7dDpGvzMk/RdFLXcDc_LI/AAAAAAAAAaw/cpL9iIGahQU/s400/DSCF5008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5030885124789304498" />
The 3.5 hour flight from Singapore to Hong Kong is a pretty common trip for people here. They go for gambling and shopping weekends. Drop the gambling and throw in drinking and eating and you’ve got my week. It’s pretty easy to see why people move between Hong Kong and Vancouver so easily. The water and mountains with a city sandwiched in between must be a pretty familiar site for both. I flew into Hong Kong earlier in the morning on Friday and spent the day wandering around Central checking out the sites. I finally got to see one of if not my favourite buildings up close and personal. The first stop was a trip up the Bank of China building to the 43rd floor for a view of the city. I met up with some friends and we grabbed some Shanghai style dinner and went for drinks. The next day was all about shopping. We took a trip over to Kowloon which is kind of like China town in every city in the world except it never ends. Oh yeah, I forgot, we had the best dim sum for brunch at some place near Causeway Bay. That night we ended up at LKF for a crazy night of drinking and dancing. It reminded me a lot of places here. Drinking on the streets, lots of bars jammed into the same spot, a huge expat crowd. The big difference is there are 7-11s in the neighbourhood so people tend to get their beer there and drink on the streets before heading into a bar. Some might even argue that 7-11 is the best bar in town . . . but those people are dumb.

The next day I wanted to go to Shenzhen, which is the city on the China site. It was totally different than expected and a big culture shock. It’s kind of hard to describe, so I won’t. On my last day I was flying out of Macau so got up early and took a ferry to the tiny little city. It’s a tiny little city that looks like a Mediterranean city but full of Chinese gamblers. The food is great and the casinos are easily abused by budget travels.

Click on the picture to look at some of the city photos. Hopefully I’ll have pictures from night time partying soon.

Music worth listening to from LCD Soundsystem.

Music you’d be listening to right now if you were as cool as me

Avalanches – Brain (Teazer) . . . . its so fuckin party

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Goodbye to the mother and the cover

Klaxons – Golden Skans

Menomena – Wet & Rusting

Arcade Fire – Intervention

The Shins – Sleeping Lessons

Bloc Party – The Prayer

Looking for love in all the wrong places.

It’s the oldest profession in the world and I an irrational fear of it. Being from Canada, I’m of the view that prostitutes are disease carrying drug addicts trying to get their next fix, hence the fear. Around these parts though, prostitution is prevalent and open. I figured it was time to get over myself and accept the world with arms open. So when the team decided to go Orchard Towers after the bar I didn’t protest. Before I left for Singapore John says ‘you have to visit Four Floors of Whores.’ Well I finally made it to the infamous four floors in Orchard Towers. Picture the brothels from Hollywood movies with girls strung over the railings making cat calls and drunken guys swaying back and forth with a girl on each arm. Now remove all the red satin curtains and wooden bar and replace it with a discount mall and escalators. Kind of funny, kind of fun. That’s Orchard Towers. I’m still not planning on paying for sex anytime soon, but I’m not afraid anymore.

Some songs worth checking:

The Golden Dogs . . . check out construction worker

Arcade Fire cover my fav Clash song . . . kind of a bad recording though

Happy Ending

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_nP7dDpGvzMk/RcFb2sPGdRI/AAAAAAAAAVk/jPSzF5VYGqI/s400/DSCF4835.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026399654267745554" />With a few assignments lingering in the background, I figured it was the perfect time to take my first, of hopefully many, four day weekend trips to Thailand. This particular trip took me to Phuket and Ko Phi Phi on the west coast of Thailand. It was a tough start. I went by myself for the first 2 days and didn’t book a place to stay in advance. The beach that I was meeting my friends a few days later was basically fully booked except for one room and it took me half a day to find it. The next three days involved sitting on beaches, drinking beer, swimming in the ocean, snorkeling, hanging with friends, watching lady-boy volleyball matches, watching Muay Thai fights, running away from prostitutes, playing connect four with prostitutes, and getting a Thai massage.

Ko Phi Phi is the exact vision of paradise I had in my head. Azure blue water, fine white sand, massive limestone cliffs jetting out of the ocean. I didn’t want to leave. But alas, I did and now I’m home until my next trip.

Sitting on the beach in Thailand

One of my favourite things about swimming in salt water is picking the salt out of my hair when it dries. I looked through MySpace and blogspot and other sources of hipsterness. Low and behold a scene exists. I emailed every label and promotions group and person I could find which ended up being one for each category. They all pointed me to the Jens Lekman concert but said it was sold out. Then they warned me that the scene is very underground and very small and that the show was sold out because the venue only holds like 50 people, but I’d be able to make it to the after party.

So I went, and took the team. The after party was made up of my team, and two other teams of about the same size and then Jens and his girl on the decks, so not many people. My first taste of Singapore’s indie scene left me pretty unsatisfied. I mean the music was great and the people were cool, but there weren’t many of them. I did get to meet some real deal Singaporeans who enjoy indie music. When I told them I was from Canada they quickly asked if I had ever seen an Arcade Fire show. I said ‘yes, many times’ and they were all like ‘wow.’

Click the picture to see some shots from the night and some pictures from my trip to KL. The monkeys in KL are totally civilized. The monkey on the trashcan from one of the pictures only climbed on the can to take a dump, then smiled for pictures and ran back up his tree.

Fake Rolex Owner

Singapore is endearingly known as Asia Lite because it is clean and orderly and relatively well off. As a traveler in the region, Singapore is little taste of home, but starting in Singapore I’m experiencing Asia backwards. This weekend was my first trip to real Asia. I hopped on a local Singapore bus, crossed the boarder to Malaysia and entered a new world. Traffic was crazy, it was dirty, and everyone wanted to drive me somewhere or get me young girls. I jumped on a bus and headed to Kuala Lumpur. Easily the best part of the trip was the markets. Negotiations class in full effect. I had my BATNAs ready and tried to anchor the price to what I wanted. I bought a fake belt, fake shirts, and a fake Rolex. Good times. Down one alley in Chinatown I found a meat market, and not like La Tulipe, I mean a real meat market. I can now check the “walk down a street which chickens running around” off my list of things to do before I die. Sorry Catalina, I know how much you wanted to be the one who introduced me to chicken streets.

Today I went to a mall to be inside

Let me tell you something about living on the equator. The concept of inside isn’t really all that important. The main floor of most apartments is open-air. There are tables and people generally lounge around, play ping pong, and smoke. Then there’s the levels that people live on. The stairs have big openings where people in Canada would put a glass window. Each floor again has huge open “windows.” Then there are the apartments themselves. The balcony and living room aren’t separated. There’s a sliding glass door that doesn’t really close and there are no screens anywhere. Basically what I’m trying to describe is that you are always outside . . . even when you are inside. On campus, a complex, like the business building, will have a common roof, but each room is its own separate entity with its own air conditioning. Going from one class to the next through the halls means you go outside. And the roofs aren’t really attached to the building. Air freely passes through the metre gap between the ceiling and the top of the wall. The only way to walk somewhere and be inside is to go to the mall.

Questions:

So are you outside right now?
I’m in my apartment, so yes I’m outside.

Then what prevents the lizards from taking up permanent residence under your microwave?
Nothing. I call the small one Shifty.

We did it! It wasn’t easy to break free the shackles of outsiderism but through sheer determination, strong willed individuals and a commitment to the team, the exchange faction has found a watering hole worthy of mention. Since I’ve been here it has rained for about an hour everyday and let me tell you it rains hard. I’ve never been in storms that produced such heavy rain. The sky turns black, streets turn into rivers, and there is no protecting yourself.

Moving on. Imagine the smelliest dirty ghetto with bugs running around and extreme heat. Now imagine there’s a big fine for having alcohol and rules about girls and noise and guests. That’s my residence. Most of my friends (yes you) who had never been to Singapore really knew nothing about the country but still felt the need to warn me about chew gum and told me that the country was really strict and really clean. That’s pretty much about all I knew about the country before I got here. I came with the impression that it’s a boring and kind of nerdy place where everyone falls into line behind absurdly strict rules. Luckily I was wrong. I’ve only been here two days and I already know my impressions were off.

Singapore is actually a little more liberal than Canada on a few fronts. For example, prostitution is apparently legal. There’s even a place known as the Four Floors of Whore on Orchard Street. It’s not really a prostitution joint anymore, but they still walk the halls. It's now an irony loving hipster hang out.

The real big thing is the fines and enforcement of those fines. There are fines for spitting, spitting out your chewing gum, littering, feeding the monkeys, etc, etc. It’s a $10,000 fine for feeding monkeys but its only $120 for not wearing a seatbelt. I don’t really understand the logic.

Luckily, people here like to play as well as not litter or spit. Lonely planet says Singapore is taking over Bangkok as the Southeast Asian nightlife capital. I can’t say I’ve had a real impression yet. I mean the bars have been packed and awesome, but its new years. The one thing that’s not awesome is the beer prices. The cheapest beer at a grocery store I’ve found so far is $15 for a 6 pack of Tiger beer and it’s like $10+ to buy a beer at a bar.

Also there’s no kite flying.

Best Bathroom Ever

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_nP7dDpGvzMk/RZcWHJOU8EI/AAAAAAAAAC0/dkHZjLsnPVU/s400/bestbathroom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5014501022091243586" />
The National Orchid Garden in the Singapore Botanic Gardens has the best bathroom ever. Rightly so, I guess. I live in a posh apartment full of childless middle-aged families who dislike being disturbed in the middle of the night. We’re the only students in the whole apartment and we’ve managed to piss off everyone in the past with parties that would last until 4 or 5 in the morning. So this past weekend we thought we’d be nice to our neighbours and send everyone to the bar at 11. We figured it would take 45 minutes for everyone to actually leave, meaning peace and quiet for the neighbours as they headed to bed at 12.

It didn’t quite work out as planned. We did get everyone out by 12 but the neighbours still weren’t impressed. The couple from upstairs came down and started to yell at me as people were leaving. They told my South American friends to stop speaking Mexican. Then the South Americans got offended and started to get in my neighbour’s face. Then the lady started to tell me how I was a typical Ontarian. I told her I grew up in Westmount. It didn’t really escalate into much but when the landlords called with their weekly list of complaints they did mention it would be nice if we went to apologize to our neighbours. I think that’s a bridge I’m going to let burn. And that’s that. Check out the pictures.

Rock Plaza Central

I’ll go ahead and get the obvious out of the way . . . this song sounds like Neutral Milk Hotel, but don’t worry Rock Plaza Central have their own style and sound, just listen to other songs on their website. I’ve been listening to a number of his songs for years and didn’t know it. He’s worked with Yo La Tengo and Jad Fair and had his songs covered by countless musicians. Hell, Kurt Cobain used to sport a ‘Hi How Are You’ tee. Daniel is a little on the odd side and his music definitely isn’t for everyone, but a few little gems stand out as simply brilliant. The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a documentary worth seeing.

Download Daniel Johnston - Held the Hand

Singapore or Bust

In just under two months I will be calling Singapore home. Yeah, seriously, Singapore. The exchange program through McGill has an exchange deal with National University of Singapore and somehow I got accepted. In a few months this site is going to be littered with pictures of Asia.

Singapore is an interesting place, at least in text. The government is essentially a one-party system, but the members of the government are still elected. The government controls the media, the courts, and well everything except the economy, yet it is considered one of the least corrupt counties in the world.
